Smart pipes: sensor systems for buried utility performance monitoring

Buried utilities, such as water pipes, are often treated as "out of sight, out of mind", that is until they fail. Although condition monitoring methods are available, they mainly involve considerable manual input and are time consuming to conduct. Current pipes are therefore essentially 'dumb'. However, with current technology it is felt that more intelligent or self sensing pipes, so called 'Smart pipes', might be possible. This presentation will present details of a feasibility study undertaken to establish what is possible now and what issues need to be overcome in the future to enable such pipeline systems to become reality.
